From the President’s Desk: September 25th, 2006
To all of our families, friends, and clients:
With another hurricane season almost in the record books, I believe that it is safe to say that we are all breathing a bit easier, and what a difference a few months makes. There is little question in my mind that New Orleans is on the mend.
This summer brought about some shining examples of the strength and resiliency of our community. The 18th annual New Orleans International Piano Competition is a terrific example. Held once again at Loyola University’s Rousell Hall, this years contestants were some of the most exciting, fresh young talent assembled anywhere. There were many friends that we have not seen since last years competition, so naturally, the conversation briefly focused on the personal impact of the storm on our families, our homes or businesses. But then, after the almost obligatory conversation regarding these topics, the conversation shifted to the reason for the gathering; piano talent and lots of it.
The recent events at Tulane University’s music department are another fine example. Our community owes a debt of gratitude to the generosity of Tulane University for making Dixon Hall available to other organizations in our community such as the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, New Orleans Friends of Music, and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra just to name a few. Dr. Barbara Jazwinski deserves a great deal of credit for these efforts. Also to her credit is the newly established “All Steinway School” at Tulane University’s Newcomb Department of Music. Her leadership is an example of how great New Orleanians are choosing to write the future of our “new city” in a better way.
Another great example is the upcoming 2006-2007 L.P.O. Schedule. It has been years since we have seen such life, vibrancy and an overwhelming sense of expectancy as is rightfully felt right now. This years schedule features more Steinway artists than have visited New Orleans in the past five. Misha & Cipa Dichter, and Jeffrey Seigel are just a few whose talents will be available for us to enjoy.
Tonight, as the eyes of the world are upon us as the New Orleans Saints return to the New Orleans Superdome, I feel that the world will see the resolve, spirit, and commitment of those of us whom have chosen to return, stay, and rebuild our great city. I have never been a sports fan, but tonight I think I’ll sit back and admire the accomplishments of the past year that my fellow New Orleanians and I have worked so hard to bring to fruition.
Best wishes and kindest regards,
Steve Kinchen

"When one plays a Steinway, there is a warmth and nobility in the sound that is unequalled by any other instrument."
